#SEO for #SmallBusiness Owners

By Ricky Davies

SEO can seem like wizardry, well it isn't. and this article will outline some tips so you can understand SEO more.

SEO short for search engine optimisation is the optimisation of a website for a keyword. So think of a keyword such as dog accessories in south wales. That would be a keyword and SEO would then optimise your website for that.

Here are some SEO tips for small business.

1. Quality counts

years ago you could pump out article after article and the search engines would love it. Fast forward to 2016 and the search engines will punish you for it. Do not spam, create good useful content and you will be rewarded for it. I have found in our experience that articles over 1000 words in length seems to gain the most traction with search engines, while smaller articles tend to get buried.

But that isn't always the case, and with anything take the advice in this article with a pinch of salt because frankly the search engines change. What is good now may change in the future.

2. Look at your competitors

Looking at the competition lets you know what they are doing. Is their site responsive? Do they blog, do they use social media? If they are doing all of the above and you are not and they are out ranking you then you best start, because if you want to compete you will have to emulate them and then eventually overtake them.

3. Be realistic

Unless your budget is in the millions of pounds then your site will never rank for keywords that are seriously competitive, but the beauty is you don't have to compete for these keywords. For example two keywords:

- finance insurance

- finance insurance in Brooklyn, New York

Both above could be used for your SEO, but only one of them you could possibly rank for. That would be the second as its less competitive and actually it's a better keyword to target.

It is more targeted, and visitors searching for that keyword would be more than likely to purchase off you.

4. Give it time

hired a new SEO consultant? Then give them time, SEO takes a while. Personally I would say anything from 3 - 6 months is not unreasonable. SEO takes time but it's the long haul, if you want quicker results try PPC, but be advised you could lose a lot of money before becoming profitable.

5 Common Mistakes in Your #HomeBusiness #WebDesign To Avoid

By Amy Austin

While every Web site design should reflect the unique qualities of the business itself, there are some universal rules of professional design that every business owner should follow. You don't want to lose a potential customer or client due to a simple mistake.

1) Don't Be Too Flashy

Flash animation certainly has its place in the Web site world - but it's typically not on the home page of your business site. Customers arrive at your Web site expecting to find helpful information about the products and services that interest them - not a slowly unfolding display of digital animation. Use flash wisely - and sparingly - in your professional Web design. I recommend not using flash at all; especially if you are using SEO. Discuss the pros and cons with your design team.

2) Don't Strain the Eye

Keeping Web site design simple can literally save you - and your customers - from headaches. Use a tried-and-true font style, such as Arial, that's sans-serif and proven to be readable. Background is another area of concern for professional Web design. Using busy patterned backgrounds or placing colored type against a black background may cause users to get frustrated and leave your site.

3) Don't Make it Difficult

Use of navigation in designing your web site is like using GPS on a road trip. Use it wisely to guide visitors to the desired destination - and they will enjoy themselves along the way. Resist the urge to get too creative with this aspect of your web page - a clean navigation panel is a user's best resource. Don't lose your customers interest in a flood of flashy pictures and spinning click here buttons.

4) Don't Waste Time

When your Web site design is full of graphics and images, it requires a greater amount of bandwidth. This increased bandwidth takes longer for the user to download. Keep in mind that some people use older computers. In the time it takes for your Web site design to load, your customer may very well decide it's not worth the wait. Only use the graphics and images that are absolutely necessary for your web site and save the rest for your portfolio.

5) Don't Overdo It

Too much or a cluttered Web site design overwhelms your site's visitors and can make your business appear unprofessional. A disorganized site tends to reflect poorly on the very business it is supposed to promote, while a professional Web design speaks volumes about your attention to detail. Keep it simple and clean.

A good website design needs to not only turn customers' heads, but also keeps them interested. Follow the simple guidelines of a business Web design and you'll see the beauty in a more positive visitor experience.

Create a Professional Web Design for Your Home Page

There's no place like home in professional Web design - the homepage, that is.

When you create a website homepage, keep in mind that first impressions truly are everything. You only have a few seconds to capture their attention. More than any other page on your site, your homepage's design should help your visitors answer several key questions about your business.

Bringing visitors to your homepage is only half the battle. In order to be effective, your homepage must also encourage visitors to stick around and take action. Whether you create a website yourself or work with a professional Web design company, there are several steps you can take to make your homepage a sticky success.

Add a Logo Design

Little things can make a big difference in professional website, and that is certainly the case with adding a logo to your homepage. A professional company can work with you to create a customized logo design that strengthens your brand identity and boosts customer confidence. This logo should also be produced in several file formats for images --.JPG,.EPS, and .TIF -- so you can use your new logo in the website or in print marketing materials.

Explain Who You Are

You'll need to tell visitors about yourself - and do it fast. Building rapport and relationship is a key part of attraction marketing for your business. As soon as a visitor arrives at your homepage, the clock is ticking. If your page does not point them directly to the information they want, they may lose interest in your company. One popular way to accomplish this -- add an "About Us" page to your website.

Reduce Scrolling

Here, web site layout takes its cue from print design. Just like a newspaper's major headlines should be above the fold, your professional Web design should place your most pertinent information above the point where a visitor must start scrolling to view. The more scrolling required by your Web design, the less likely your visitor is to stay.

Test for Compatibility

When you create a website homepage, remember that not all browsers and devices were created equal. Keeping your design simple can help you capture the largest possible audience across the board. To be sure, though, you'll need to test your website from multiple devices and browsers.

Update Regularly

Once your web site is completed, you may be tempted to leave it that way for quite some time. A website, just like a business is always changing and growing. In order for your site to keep visitors and search engines coming back for more, it must be updated regularly. You want to keep building your contact data base with new information and subscriptions.

Promote Recognition and Testimonials

When done in moderation, the homepage can be a good place to display small graphics representing rewards and recognition you've received from your clients and industry peers. By adding these graphics when you create a website homepage, you can strengthen your professionalism by showing visitors that you are a legitimate business worthy of their time.

With so much depending on your homepage, it's important to get it right. When you're ready to create a website yourself or work with a professional, remember these simple suggestions for a professional and effective site that encourages visitors to stick around.

The Top 5 Tips To Increase Your Rankings In The #SERPS

By Max Webster-Dowsing

We all know that it can be a difficult process to achieve those high keyword rankings that we all lust after. While it is know as a common fact that we need acquire links from third parties to our website to gain popularity for our chosen keyword, it is often not discussed or taught how to improve your own site first. I have made minor tweaks with these following tips before now on my own site and have seen a massive jump in my rankings. Do not be one of the crowd and rush out and get hundreds of links without sorting out your own website first.

1. Title Tag:

You really need to get your title tag right, keep it as short and snappy as possible. This needs to be your headline for your business or site. Be as creative as possible. Also remember to include your keyword within it, you have available a maximum of between ten and fifty characters.

2. Description Meta Tag:

This again is similar to the above, remember to keep it short and you must include your chosen keyword within the field.

3. Header Tag:

The header tag is often referred to as the H1, H2 and H4 tag. It is a well known fact that the major search engines give the most recognition to these tags. The most important one though is the H1 tag, ensure that you include your keyword within this field, this is often used as the title of your chosen webpage.

4. Alt Tag:

Alt tag refers to Alt text which means it is associated with a image. For instance when you visit a site and hover your cursor over an image you will see some text appear. I find it is always very good practice to include an image that is relevant to the webpage it is on. Try and include your keyword within the field, by doing that you are sending a clear signal to the search engines that your webpage is showing precedence to a given keyword phrase.

5. Keyword Meta Tag:

This is a straight-forward tag, the clue is in the title. This is important for two reasons, firstly you clearly need to include your keyword in this field but secondly what you find many webmasters doing is putting all of their sites keywords in this field. You must only put the relevant keyword in this meta tag, if you include all of the others then you are sending the wrong message to all of the search engines and your rankings could suffer as a result.

Why Your #Website Needs a #ResponsiveDesign?

By Shakti Prakash Nayak

Responsive web design is not a new concept. Probably, most of the webmasters are not clear about this technology. Simply, it's a design that helps users in viewing a website using any kind of computer device like, desktop, mobile phone, laptop, tablet etc. Now-a-days, smart phones are taking over the Internet surfing along with the other mobile devices. People use them for browsing social media, online shopping, email conversation, chat and banking. This is the reason why businesses around the world are now trying to make their website user and device friendly.

Idea Behind the Responsive Design:

In a normal web design, the users find it difficult to view a website clearly on their mobile devices, because the purpose is to serve a desktop screen. Here, the user may leave the website soon. But, in case of a responsive one, the site runs properly on any device and the user can get full access using the small screen. When it comes to a redesigning the website, it hardly needs some hundred to a few thousands of dollars. But, the key to success is user experience. It is clear that the future is mobile and it's a challenge for the business owners to capture the mobile visitors.

Why a Responsive Design is Essential?

The aim of a search engine like Google is to provide the most related information for positive user experience. The same rule also applies to a business website. If a visitor lands on a website that looks odd on his/her mobile device, he/she may leave the site immediately. More than 65% of the users buy products and services, if the site is responsive and informative.

In case of search engine optimization, the webmaster will be able to run a single campaign for the website and it is also easy to manage the website's content, design, social media and other marketing stuff.
Online marketing is all about competition. If the website is responsive, it can achieve maximum traffic and conversion than the competitors.

According to a research, more than 50% of people use social media through mobile devices. So, responsive design is the only way to reach the target population easily. It engages the customer and also drives them to the website.

It is a fact that Google is dominating the search world. According the algorithm, responsive web pages are good for search engine, because, the same URL is used for all devices. Google also finds it easy to crawl, index and organize. Instead of using a separate URL for the same site, responsive design should be adopted.

While talking about competition, you may not be aware about the strategies followed by your competitors. They may not be using this cutting age technology. So, it is the perfect time to redesign or create a new website that grabs maximum user attention.

#WebDesign Tips for #SmallBusinesses

By Karina Popa

Add Contact Details

Visitors should be able to contact you, so make sure that your phone number is displayed clearly on top and bottom of all pages. Add your email address, and if possible, your place of business in the footer, at the bottom bar of each page. Create a page with all your contact information, including a map, direction, operating hours, and leave a portion in which visitors can fill out their personal information.

Make Your Brand Look Professional and Consistent

Animated graphics and smiley faces should be used in your emails to friends instead of your website, since the latter should look professional to reflect your brand. It is best to choose the same colors as your logo. Use one or two font sizes consistently throughout the site. Graphics and photos should also look professional and complement one another. When in doubt, make it simple.

Simplify Navigation on Your Site

Make navigation buttons/tabs consistent on all pages. As earlier mentioned, facilitate navigation by means of the F-shaped reading pattern with the use of links, buttons or tabs positioned on the top or left part of the page. In addition, you should:

Limit primary navigation up to eight tabs, with five being the ideal number.

Make sure clickable elements are consistent when in comes to font, size and style.

Add a header and footer on every page for information and key links.

Include a progress tracker, or a so-called Breadcrumb, near the top of every page. It should look like "Home> Catalog> Product #1", making it simple for visitors to backtrack.

Place Important Information "Above the Fold"

In a newspaper, the top stories can be seen on the first half of the page, referred to as "above the fold", which is also applicable to your website. A recent Nielsen report reveals that 80% of visitors will not go over the entire page of a site therefore the most important information should be found close to the top.

Put the business name and the logo in a noticeable spot.

Use a powerful headline/tagline to highlight the things you do.

Add special offers to attract more visitors.

Outline your services/products with the help of visuals and menu bar.

Visitors should know what to do once they land on your homepage, which is the "call-to-action", so you need to include your contact details, a form to be filled out and perhaps an option to download info. Remember that while "above the fold" is a moving target because of the increasing use of mobile devices, it is still essential in web design.

Make Sure Your Site Loads Fast

When your site takes too long to load, like more than 3 seconds, visitors will leave and instead navigate to your competitor. To make sure that your site loads fast, keep the size of images smaller, but with good quality, and limit the amount of photos, videos, videos, as well as social media sharing buttons.

Build Trust and Credibility

Your website should be a tool by which potential customers get to know more about your products/services. To look more credible, your site should include what you offer, feedback from customers, links to articles about your business, any awards received and logos of organizations in which you are a member - like the Chamber of Commerce.

Local #InternetMarketing Services For the Small Business

By Allan Joseph

Small businesses who do not take advantage of the Internet are missing the boat when it comes to promoting their products and services. Applying local Internet marketing services can turn a small business web site into a lead generation tool.

Many businesses have taken the very first step of building a web site. There is a bit more to it, but more on that later. Let's focus on the web site first. Here are some tips to make the web site more effective. Keep the content and the look-and-feel simple and appealing. The visitor should be attracted to the site and able to find clear information about the company's products and services. In fact, there should be just enough information to answer the most common questions that the visitor might have. However, just putting up a site on the Internet isn't going to be enough to bring more business.

More and more people are using search engines to find local businesses. In fact, recent surveys indicate that more people are searching for local products and services on the web than in the "yellow" page books. The search engine companies are wise to that and are adapting their search results to how the web user searches. Therefore, businesses need to do two things to take advantage of this trend.

1) Adapt the web site to the ways people are searching for their services. That means optimizing the site pages each to the desired search phrase. That's called on-site SEO (search engine optimization).

2) Promote the web site to maximize the odds of being found. Promoting a site includes the following: getting listed in normal search results for targeted key phrases; signing up on local business directories; adding profiles to social media sites; and building links to the site from a variety of other sources. The Internet provides many opportunities for a site to be found beyond normal search engine results.

The key to driving more visitors to a web site it to make it easy for them to find it when they search for targeted keyword phrases related to the business. Nowadays, targeted keyword phrases include geographic modifiers. For example, "marietta ga hvac" gets searched hundreds of time a month. If a local HVAC contractor in Marietta, GA exploits that, his/her business can be well-positioned to capture that search audience.

Small business owners need to apply these tactics now... before their competitors do.

Promoting your web site on the Internet can seem intimidating or overwhelming. For more information on how to apply local Internet marketing [] services, visit Marietta Web Design [].

Common Small Business #WebDesign Mistakes to Avoid

By Andy Cresswell

As a small business owner, you probably already know that your website is a very important tool for marketing your brand and reaching your target audience. Ensuring your website design is attractive and functional to your audience is also necessary for success. Unfortunately, there are quite a few small business web design mistakes that are all too common. Sometimes this occurs when small business owners hire a cheap designer and believe they're getting a value, although sometimes it's mistakes the website operator makes by excluding certain important information.

To make sure you maximise the potential of your business website, keep these pitfalls in mind and avoid them.

Mistake 1: Not Building Trust

Building trust with your audience is arguably the most important thing any small business web design should do. There are actually some really easy and quick ways to build trust, as well as improve your conversion rate. Start my making sure your full address, company name and phone number is included on every page, preferably the footer. If you have an e-commerce storefront, make sure you are displaying badges like your SSL certificates and sitelock. After all, most people are not going to want to place an order if they doubt the professionalism and security of your website.

If you are a very small business or a freelancer, it also helps to add a picture of yourself to your "About Us" page along with a personal quote. Be prepared to be very transparent about your services and offer as much detail as possible, including any return policy or guarantees you provide. You should also have a privacy policy on your website, which tells your visitors what you will and will not do with their personal information that's collected.

Finally, consider adding the rel="publisher" link to your homepage, which points to your business's Google+ page. This way, the image used on your Google+ profile will be displayed alongside your website on Google search results.

Mistake 2: Website is Too Flashy

It's not uncommon for business owners to get a little carried away with the content and design of their website, requesting flashy graphics and bold colours that detract, not add value. To effectively market your brand and improve visibility, you want a clean and minimalist interface that impresses customers but makes it easy for them to find what they are looking for.

Content should be straight-forward and relevant, not a long rambling monologue or an excuse to stuff in keywords unnaturally. Users should come away with a good experience and feel like they found exactly what they were looking for.

Mistake 3: No Call to Action Buttons

Call to action buttons are important because they funnel your visitors further into your site. By keeping website users on your website for a longer amount of time, you'll lower your bounce rate and increase the chance of a conversion. It also improves user experience by directing users exactly where they want to go, assuming it isn't overdone. If you sell insurance, for example, you would have a call to action button encouraging users to request a quote. If you sell products online, you would have a call to action button for users to "Buy Now" or "Add to Cart."

Mistake 4: Not Using the Rel="Nofollow" Tag on Outbound Links

Finally, a really common small business web design mistake is not using the rel="nofollow" tag on outbound links away from the website. While it may not seem like a big issue, it actually allows you to control the "link juice" of your website, which gets leeched out to all of your "dofollow" outbound links. Only links going to your internal pages should be "dofollow," which means they pass along this link juice.

It's also important to avoid linking to a lot of low authority or low quality websites, especially if you do not have a great deal of inbound links to your website.

Unfortunately, these mistakes are all too common, but very easy to fix, for the most part. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so the best option is avoiding these mistakes in the first place by working with an experienced individual who can create a custom web design for your business.

#SmallBusiness #WebDesign - Five Common Mistakes to Avoid

By Brian Jay

If getting customers to visit your website is your first challenge, getting the customer to look around is your second. Your site's basic design, layout, and content can be the difference between a sale and losing a customer to the back button. Whether you are looking to build a website from scratch or thinking about updating a current site, here is a list of five design no-no's that are sure to drive most of your customers away.

1) Flash Introductions

In addition to being terrible for search engine optimization, modern web surfers loathe the Flash introduction. Intro animations are mostly (and thus expected to be) a barrier between a customer and the information for which s/he is searching. Even if your introduction contains relevant information or offers a skip button, trash the Flash!

Flash animations can be a useful tool, however, if your product or service is best described with an audio-visual medium. If you know your animation helps educate your customer on your product or service, link to it on your home page, but avoid requiring a customer to watch or listen before moving on to a different page.

2) Automatic Sound or Videos

If you must have music or a video on your homepage, make sure the customer is given the option to view or listen. NEVER have the sound or video play automatically, even if you have a "turn off" button in plain sight. In my opinion, these are the two most common violations of netiquette (that's etiquette for the internet) and will send your customers searching for the back button, not the off button!

3) Stock Photography

We've all seen the picture of the smiling telephone operator waiting to take our call, but she sticks out like a sore thumb on a small business' website. Simply put: stock photography is cold and impersonal, not the image you want to portray to your customers.

So what's the solution to filling all of that empty space on your website? A digital camera! Take pictures of your office, team members, storefront, showroom, warehouse, etc. These pictures 1) show you are a real company, not just a website and 2) give your customers the feeling they are dealing with actual hardworking people like themselves.

If you are worried about the quality of the photos you can take with your own equipment, hiring a photography student from a local college can be an inexpensive way to make the photos on your website look more professional. If money is less of an issue, a professional photographer could get the work done in an afternoon.

4) Images of Text, Instead of Text

You should not encounter this problem if you are starting from scratch (if you do, change designers!), but I still come across dozens of small business websites each month that have images of text instead of text. This is the biggest search engine optimization (SEO) mistake that can be made. Period. If you have a website that has nothing but images, you are way past due for an upgrade!

In addition to being an SEO problem, images of text prevent customers from copy and pasting phone numbers or addresses and other useful information, but mostly it just looks dated and unprofessional.

5) Clean is King

Simple, clean designs are the new dominating design force on the web. Many of the most visited websites on the web have mostly while backgrounds, text, and a header and footer. Take a closer look at some of your favorite websites, you'll notice they are deceptively simple!

How do you apply this simple design principle? Avoid black backgrounds, harsh color palettes, or graphics-intensive designs. This way, your content becomes king, not your design.

Bonus tip: Do your customers visit a physical store or office? If so, adding a picture of the outside of your building to the "contact us" page can help your customers quickly identify your building and avoid getting lost or missing your business all together.

#WebsiteDesign - The 8 "C's" That Make a Site Sticky

By Darryl D Alexander

I believe in judging a website by how well it converts visits into profits and this can be achieved with "stickiness"... the measure of how long a user spends on your site.

The longer they stay the likelier they are to spend money, ask any good salesperson worth his weight in salt!

Website Design, "stickiness" & the 8 "C's"

Your design should keep visitors on your site AND make them come back for more so implement a few of the "C's" in your site design to improve your conversion rate:

"Content is king" so ensure your web copy is unique, fresh, useful to users and fits in with the overall design.

Broadcast content with RSS Feeds, e-mails and sms to your target audience and link to relevant sites to get your point across (automate this in the website design).

Interactive website design (on-line games, weather reports, etc.) ensures consumers spend more time on your website.

Include F.A.Q.S, reports, research data or on-line response forms and integrate call to actions throughout the website.

2. Community

Engage people on your website, plug-ins from Social networks should be incorporated in your website design to further develop peoples perception of your brand.

It's important for prospects or customers to reach you, display your contact details on each page and use an email notifier to inform users of any updates to the website.

Your design should include a Blog and allow comments giving you a better insight of your visitors needs.

Allow visitors to personalise landing pages and ensure the website design is customer centric with personal greetings and personal preferences.

5. Commerce

Customers should be able to complete the entire purchasing process on-line so incorporating on-line registration, secure payment facilities, order tracking and return policies in the website design is essential.

6. Convenience

Ensure your Hosting Company is reliable and keep your website down time to a minimum, remove dead links and ensure that information in no more than 3 clicks away (plan during the initial website design phase).

The website design should ensure a pleasant user experience with simple navigation, good graphics and clear typography.

7. Choice

The website should offer a wider selection of products than normal distribution channels or perhaps offer a product customisation option for registered members.

8. Cost

We always looking for bargains and the easiest way to find them is on-line, offer discounts for on-line purchases or bookings (check out for a good example).

Plenty of thought has to go into website design so always plan before you launch your on-line presence (or overhaul your existing web design).

We incorporate various marketing techniques into all our web design and will be sharing opinions in future articles.

7 Characteristics of a Bad #WebDesign

By Maria Marilyn Madrid

Did you know that one of the easiest things to do when it comes to web design is creating poorly designed websites? Unfortunately, from the time websites become en vogue up to the present, there are still web designers who are guilty of doing this. The situation becomes even more dumbfounding considering the progress web designing has made in terms of technology, knowledge, and skills; these bad characteristics should have been eliminated by now. Some of the common features of bad web design are:

  1. Bad colour scheme. Colours are supposed to enhance the aesthetic aspect of the website but this is not the case always. Some websites make the mistake of using light colors as text, use glaring colors as background, and a sight for sore eyes through a mix of colours like yellow and pink with violet as background.

  2. Loading takes time. This is one problem with making a web site very colourful and with lots of special effects, it makes users frustrated as loading tend to be slower. Thus, beauty and interesting information in the site is totally forgotten because a majority of web users do not have the patience to wait for page loading.

  3. Default page does not fit computer screen. Even if the user is using a 32inch LCD, the entry page of the site visited still needs scrolling down or sideways to view other parts of the entire page. And this is not good as users want the whole thing outright. They are looking for information, not bonuses and points in a video game.

  4. Cluttered arrangement. Until now, you see web pages where different important tabs are not aligned together. They are instead plastered in different portions of the page. As a result, users will have a hard time finding the necessary button to click because the buttons are scattered.

  5. Text that are difficult to read. Not only does the web designer utilise glaring colour for the font, the size is also a problem. For example, if your website is geared towards senior adults, how can you expect them to read the text when even if they enhance their vision, it is still unreadable due to its size?

  6. Lots of junk materials in the front page. Are counters really important? Do you need to highlight awards instead of content? Do you need to broadcast your profile in the entry page before the transaction page? These are just some common errors with regards to front page loading and bad features of a web page design.

  7. More frames than the page can handle. Because of advances in web design technology, multiple frames are no longer current. Yes, it has still some usefulness but not to the point of loading too much frames in the web site.

Indeed, just because the page is colourful or has lots of interesting articles, it is already an attraction for users to flock and remain loyal to your website. The above ideas suggest that a good web design is not about taste and preference exclusively but also includes functionality and navigation.

Bad design is a no, no for Globalgraphics UK, a web design Birmingham UK company.

Three Things You Must Do When Designing and Building Your #SmallBusiness #Website

Author: Michael Massie

If you are going to have a web presence for your small business, it only makes sense that it should actually help you get more business. In order to do so, your website design should focus on performing only one function - and that's to convey your sales message to your site visitors in an effective and efficient manner.

No matter what your web designer tells you, simplicity is best when building your small business website. While having a website with lots of bright colors and flashy interactive graphics might win web design awards, it will probably not help you win customers. In fact, the more complicated your web design, the higher the risk that your sales message will be lost amidst all the fancy bells and whistles on your site.

For most small businesses, a simple and elegant four or five page website is all they need to get the job done. As an added bonus, such sites are inexpensive when compared to flashier multimedia sites. If you want your small business website to increase your profits instead of emptying your pocketbook, pay close attention to the following design guidelines when you build your site.

Make Your Website Easy to Read

In order for your website to get sales and/or leads, your small business website design needs to be user and consumer-friendly - that means it needs to be easy to read. So, short sentences and paragraphs, dark text on white (or very, very light) backgrounds and lots of white space should be the norm.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'll say it again - the purpose of having a website for your small business isn't to win design awards. It's to convey information about your product or service that guides the consumer toward making a buying decision in your favor.

If you think that dark websites and colored text on colored backgrounds looks better, you may be right. However, as I mentioned earlier loud colors and excessive graphics only serve to distract attention from the sales message contained in your site content and makes your site harder to read. Remember: keep it simple and you'll keep the sale.

Also, remember that web users tend to scan text instead of reading it start to finish like printed text. Since the majority of your visitors will not read all your content, use headlines, subheadings, and bolded text that quickly convey your overall message. Done correctly, a visitor should be able to scan all your headlines, subheads, and bold text in just a few seconds and understand the central message of your site or page.

Make Your Website Easy to Navigate

Since the chief purpose of your site is to convey information, you should design your website so the information it contains is easy to find. If you make it easy for your visitors to navigate your site, they'll thank you with their dollars. Make it difficult, and they'll leave your website before you can say "Google."

At the bare minimum, you should have a navigation bar on every webpage that includes a link back to your home page and to every top-tier page in your website. In addition, you should consider placing links back to the previous page visited at the top and bottom of the current page. Some websites use "bread crumbs" for this purpose - a "trail" of links that show each page visited since landing at the site.

Lastly, make sure that there are no broken links on your website. Broken links may not seem like a big deal to you, but to a site visitor who was clicking on a link for more information they are a major frustration. Fix your broken links!

Oh, and incidentally, making your site easy to navigate will also help the search engines to find and index all your pages, which might help you get more traffic over the long haul.

Make Sure Your Website Loads Quickly

Despite the fact that high-speed internet access has become very affordable and accessible in recent years, many web users are still using dial-up connections to access the internet. Note that these people get very frustrated when they have to wait five minutes for your webpage to load. You will lose these visitors if your web page files are too large and take too long to load.

Keep photos, graphics, and animations to a tasteful minimum on your websites, and keep your total page size under 50K to ensure maximum usability for your visitors. In addition, avoid using background music on your pages unless it is absolutely necessary - music files take time to load, and can annoy your visitors enough to make them leave your site.

By the way, smaller and faster loading pages make it easier for the search engines to spider and rank your site - an added bonus for keeping your page files small and your load times fast.

Hopefully, these guidelines will help you build a website that gets you more sales and leads for your small business. Remember, building a website that your visitors enjoy browsing will boost customer loyalty and encourage repeat sales. Create a fast-loading site that's easy to read and navigate, and your visitors will thank you with their checkbooks!

#WebDesign for #SmallBusinesses - The Best Practices

By Karina Popa

Essential aspects that small businesses should keep in mind when creating a website

If you want your presence and brand to be known on the web, you have to invest in a well-constructed website. Many online businesses make use of generic templates, disregarding the importance of a unique brand. Sorry to say, the only means to get a great brand design is to pay a considerable amount of money to allow your brand to stand out among the millions of websites.

The Process of Building Websites That Every Business Should Know

Generally, the usual low-budget website has to go through the following process:

Business Requirements - When people or businesses plan on creating a new website, they should know exactly what they want, giving a detailed description. This first phase of developing a website consists of a number of meetings plus brainstorming sessions.

Design - It is always stressed that a website should have a good design. This means that you should exert more effort and be more creative. Planning your own website is one thing, but turning this plan into reality is entirely different. While people or businesses can repetitively explain their requirements, the majority of people do not decipher what others are thinking. After everything has been said and done, there should be an agreement on the design prior to the final approval. Usually, it takes a number of proofs before the desired look is met.

Website development - After designing the website, it has to be divided into pieces of content and images to make it clear to a web browser before rendering it to an online user. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) should be considered as early as this stage. The brand has to be organized and include a mission statement, as well as product/service documents. Around all of this is the actual software development. When it comes to the web, this is known as the web application development. This brings the website structure and design to a user's interaction level by means of widgets, workflow processes, conversation tools, contact forms and shopping carts, among others.

Quality Assurance (Q & A) - Once everything is set, a website must undergo vigorous tests to make sure it works.

Go Live - A website should have a web host to make it live on the Internet so users can interact with the platform.

Website Design Should Distinguish Your Brand on the Internet

Marketing involves conversion. A website design, its features as well as the message it wants to convey make everything possible. Poor content can also contribute to a poor design. Wrong grammar, incomplete message and poor quality videos can put off a user. Aesthetically speaking, poor color combination or style can cause a website to be undetected by visitors. With the help of design, the message must be clear to any user.

Beginners' Color Guidelines for #WebDesign

By Karina Popa

Color Scheme forms the Canvas, Not the Painting

A very vital fundamental rule of web designing is the fact that howsoever splendid its design is, it plays a secondary role, and the primary role is reserved for its content. You should ensure that the color scheme you select for your site should not dominate its content. The design essentially forms a part of the background, and is meant to give a push to the content, bringing it to the forefront.

A very usual practice while designing a website is to produce a design in isolation with the help of software. In case you lack a pattern or specimen of content while designing, you may finally create a great looking design, and even your customer may instantly like it, but when incorporated with content, visitors to your site may find it rather distracting. Actually, the process of web designing is so very intertwined with the content that, at times, a superb design may have a hollow look around it in the absence of relevant content.

It is a smart idea to get started with the designing of website with a specimen of the kind of content expected to be incorporated in the site. This could be in the software employed for designing, or directly into the code. This is particularly relevant when you want to include a particular type of images or photos. Then, you can almost ensure that your design has a harmonious flow. Consider the content as if it were a unique character, needing a flawlessly fitting suit.

Begin by using a simple grayscale foundation

You can find numerous color combinations for the main background plus text base. Yet, it is recommended to make a beginning with the simplest one, meaning white or light gray or a combination of the two as a background together with gray.

When you decide to check an assortment of well accepted websites, themes or templates, you are most likely to find this kind of base in dark gray text on light gray or white. The reason is that this color combination almost guarantees to offer readability to the visitors, while allowing the text plus picture based content to appear on the forefront.

Simply select one color for highlighting

Color schemes that most frequently prove incorrect are those containing a number of colors. The bigger is the number of colors, the more difficult it becomes to have a control over them. Therefore, start by including one additional color above the base in gray color which is used for highlighting items like links, menus, few headlines and buttons etc. You may use red, green or blue for highlighting things.

Steps to Be Considered When You Are Choosing a Perfect #WebDesign Company for Your Business

By Nalini Maddela

If you are planning for designing a brand innovative website for your private business or an e-commerce industry, it is an identified truth that website design will be a daunting assignment. It is thus significant to get a perfect web design company to build your company website. There are numerous key factors which you should take into concern when thinking about the designing of your business website.

Step 1 - Know the significance of having a good website

Initially, you should know the value and significance of having a good website design, as this is the foremost impression any user will have about your entire business. Usually, badly designed or chaotically organized websites are some of the most irritating issues both existing and potential customers nag about. This makes the visitor move to your competitor based on the user experience he felt while visiting your company website.

Step 2 - Know your business model and the requirements you are looking from your website

It is important to have a clear idea about your business and your expectations that you are looking from designing a proper functional business website. It would be always beneficial to have a rough sketch of your business before you start your web design. Such a well-built plan will definitely help the web design company to create a perfect website that depicts your business model and meet your expectations too.

Step 3 - Check out different web design agencies and get a better quote

When you are having a clear idea of your investments on the website, spend your time in getting several quotes from different web design companies and go for a better quote with all the benefits. Make sure that you are not compromising on good quality over small price variations. No doubt, a professional website is a direct reflection of your business.

A good web design company will struggle to engage you in each and every move and guarantee that the changes necessary at the design stage are noted early on and constantly worked upon your project. A superior web design team will also approach you with a feasible schedule of designing and developing your business website. Further to this, meet the design team frequently to discuss the design issues if any. The website design should be user-friendly and easy to navigate for your users.

Step 4 - Check out the background of the web design company

As you are spending your precious time and money, there is no harm to check the background of that company to get a proper website for your business.

A good team should have numerous booming projects under their strap and should not negotiate on quality at any cost. It is desirable to get a proficient team or a designer with a good experience. Their experience is bound to come in versatile when you call upon them to seek out latest things or troubleshoot any other design issues that may yield out. Skilled designers typically give some very precious advice about websites and other biased issues.

Step 5 - Confirm whether they offer customized and responsive web designs

Before you employ the services of any web design company, make sure that they can convey a functional and exclusive site. This will make certain that your website stands out in the online market. It is also essential to know about the tools that they are using to have an idea on the programming language and its compatibility with search engines.

Step 6 - Additional Benefits

Most of the professional web designing companies provide a host and other related services such as Website Hosting, Search Engine Optimisation, Digital marketing and many more. Some companies also offer supple and easy to use Content Management Systems with their websites. Getting all the services under a single roof is moderately cheaper, more valuable and more efficient.

Issues regarding hosting and maintenance of the website should be examined in detail and fixed upon. If the company is offering the hosting facilities from a third party, know the reliability and the long run cost. Check out their working timings and verify if they have a 24/7 customer support.
