It's remarkable to me that so many artists have Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, LinkedIn, Google+, etc., but they don't have their own website. I believe that every musician needs a website. Having your own website is very important because social media sites come and go, but owning your own website is all yours. I remember when Friendster was the hot ticket and when everyone was on LiveJournal. Then it was all about MySpace and now Facebook. In a couple of years, the next social media fad is going to come along. Now don't get me wrong, social media is an awesome tool to communicate with your fans and they are free. But having your own website means that YOU own it and it will be around for as long as YOU want.

Start a website

A domain is the first place you should start. Domain is just another fancy word for website, as well as the term URL and homepage. Buying (a.k.a registering) your domain (website) is you owning your own property in the huge world of the Internet. A domain could be .com, .net, .info, .biz, and several others. These are all considered domains. If you get lucky, your website could simply be your stage name + .com (www.yourstagenamehere.com). I got lucky with my domain in that no one else in the world had registered (bought) the domain.

Register a domain

You can register a domain at websites called registars. There are a ton of them out there, but the most popular ones are godaddy.com and namecheap.com. Simply go to their site and look for the words "register a domain" and click there. There will be a search field with a blank box and the option o f.com, .net, .info, .biz, etc. Type in the domain name that you want and see if it's available. If it is not, the register will give you different options for the domain. For instance, if yourstagenamehere.com was taken, I could take yourstagenamehere.net, your.stage.name.here.com, your-stage-name-here.com, etc. The possibilities are endless. You can name it whatever you want, but try to make it easy to remember.

A domain costs around $9.99 a year. For $10 a year (less than $1 per month), you can own your own website!

With 55 million internet users in the UK, the vast majority of which log on every day, it is not possible that potential new customers of yours are not using the internet, so it makes a great deal of sense that you give them the opportunity to know your business exists.

Despite the fantastic coverage Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels can give, these are great supplements to having your own website but do not offer enough flexibility to consider having them as your only digital channel. Almost all social media promotion is designed to bring interested parties back to your website which not only is seen by Google as very positive, it gives you much more space to tell them more about you and capture more data about them.

So many pubs still do not have a website which means they are missing out on thousands of people knowing about them, and potentially hundreds of new customers.

Here we look at getting the foundations correct. After the foundations for your website are built, it's then time to look at all the fun elements such as text, photos, layouts and designs.

Domains & Hosting

First steps first though; before you even starting thinking about the design of your website, you will need to buy your website address (domain) and some space on the internet for it to sit on (hosting.) There are hundreds of companies who offer domain registration and hosting services and all offer slightly different pricing and contract options. Ultimately it is your choice who to use but our experience tells us:

Use a UK Hosting company, with a Support Team in the UK. Sadly the big names that advertise on the television tend to be based in the US and have offshore call centres. Having your website hosted on a US server can cause problems later on, and having non UK based Support staff is rarely a good choice. There are several UK Hosting companies we recommend.

A website domain is a little like a car number plate - only one can exist - so use one of the online services to check which ones have not been registered.

For example, If your pub is called The Ship, the domain theshippub.co.uk was taken long ago, so you need to be a bit more creative whilst still making it easy for easy to find you by name. If your pub (eg The Ship) is based in Guildford, it would make sense to consider domains such as shippubguildford.co.uk etc (There are good reasons why you should include words like pub, bar, restaurant in the domain name which we will cover in another article)

Whilst we recommend all UK based pubs have the.co.uk variation of a domain name, there is often debate about whether you should also buy the dot com, the dot org and so on. Our advice is simple - buy the main variations and then point them all to the dot co dot uk which becomes your main domain.

Ensure your hosting package is compatible with the functionality you want from your website. For example, almost all hosting packages make it easy for you to link a few pages together and upload your Sunday Lunch Menu, but if you want your table reservation or bedroom software to work perfectly on your website you need to make sure the web server is compatible.

Before you even start thinking about the design of your website, sit down with a clean sheet of paper and a sharp pencil. You don't decorate the rooms before you build a house and the same principle applies to good web design. Starting with the Home page, sketch out the page hierarchy and list every category and page you want on your website. Don't forget to include pages for your Privacy Policy and a subdirectory called Landing Pages - these become really important in later stages.

Once you have the structure agreed, it's time to consider page layout, design ideas, SEO, how to create a website that works well on a mobile phone, the importance of analytics, how to promote your website and how best to capture customers contact information.

Why does every writer need a website?

The most obvious reason--because every serious business has one! A website acts like your storefront. It tells your potential clients that you are in business and you are here to stay. The last thing a prospective client wants is someone who here today, gone tomorrow, along with their money! Remember writers, you are a writer in business!

Another very important reason to have a website is to showcase your portfolio or writing samples. Clients looking for writers like reading recent work. Writing samples allow your clients to get a feel for your voice and style. It gives you credibility as a writer.

What to include in your website

Let's start with the basics. Include your name, pen name, contact information, location, writing samples and any writing specialties. By the time you are finished with these starters, you will think of more items to add to your website. Feel free to check out my website to get some ideas.

In the end, make sure that whatever is on your website is geared towards making you look as professional as possible. So ditch the pics of you and your cute beagle. That is unless you exclusively write a column about pet care, etc. Instead, add a simple and clear headshot of yourself.

In short, ASAP! As I mentioned websites are fairly easy to set up. But equally important is the upkeep of your website. I usually try to update my website every month. I do this for two reasons: One, to keep it looking fresh and two, because with every day that passes I get better at my craft and adjust my website to reflect that. As good as I think it looks now, I know it can look better in a few months.

Regardless of the type of site you want, to be successful, your site will need to do, at least, these 3 things:

  • Get good positioning on the search engines

In achieving this goal, there's good news and bad news.

The bad news is that there are all kinds of designers out there, offering all kinds of services, and prices are pretty much across the board. The good news is that there are some simple points you can follow to help make this process easier.

So, how do you go about finding a designer?

Possibly you have a couple of designers you are interested in. But how do you know for sure? There are a few specific things that you should be aware of when picking your designer.

First and foremost, you want to check out their portfolio! This is the body of work that this designer has recently created and it tells a lot about what they offer. All web designers should have an online portfolio that you can easily access.

These days there a lot of website design companies around - some highly professional and others not so. As it is a fairly new industry with low start up costs and no qualifications "needed" to get into, many people think it is a great industry to jump into so that they can make some easy cash. These people have a very negative impact on both consumers (who get a low quality service) and on the professionals already established in the industry. A good website design company will have highly qualified designers and developers that will help you every step of the way. So how do you go about finding the best website design company for you? Let me show you a few good methods!

Look at the website designer's portfolio. Every website design company worth its weight will have an in depth portfolio page of at least 20 jobs. If you like the kind of work they have produced, then there is a good chance that they will do a good job for you. Have a look for individuality in their designs - you do not want a website that will look the same as every other site out there. See if they have the ability to make your site unique for your requirements and circumstances. Finally, make sure these design are for real companies and not just fake designs stolen from elsewhere and put into a portfolio. Go to that clients website and take a look around. If you can't get to the website, then search for that company in Google. If you can't get to them in Google, then it is probably fake. When you do find the company, consider emailing them to ask about their experience with the company.

Go to a few website design company review sites. There are plenty of review sites where potential customers like yourself can go and read all the feedback on web design companies that are either in your budget or near your location. Using this information in the right way can help you pick the best website design company for you. Look at the reviews and take into account the amount of positive reviews a company has and judge that against the negative feedback left. If a company has a lot of positive feedback and little to no negative, you are most likely looking at a decent company.

You will also want to look at companies who have a fairly large number of reviews from a diverse client base (clients working in different sectors, and especially clients working in similar sectors to yourself). There are negatives with review sites though, that you should be aware of. For example if they do websites for a very cheap cost and have great customer feedback, the feedback will be relative to the price the person paid, not necessarily the quality of the website.

We all want websites that are search-engine friendly. But sometimes when you are busy it's easy to publish a new blog post and be off to the next thing on your to do list.

Over time, this can really hurt your SEO efforts. That's why I've put together this short hit list of things you can do to boost your WordPress SEO.

Schedule these tasks in your calendar to make your blog traffic soar!

1) Post New Stuff Regularly

Google has a bias towards fresh content. Part of Google's algorithm looks at how new the content is and gives preference to more recent results. So publishing original content on a regular basis is important.

Also size matters when it comes to content. Generally longer content ranks higher than shorter content. So strive to make your post at least 500 words.

2) Create a Keywords List

If SEO is a priority, then you'll want to develop a keyword list. This is basically a list of keywords and phrases that describes your products and services. These keywords should include words from search terms that are more likely to be used to find your offerings online.

Google has some incredible tools to make keyword research easy including Google Search, Google Suggest, Google Instant and Google Wonder Wheel.

Hint: if you want a really targeted keyword list, hire an SEO expert!

3) Install an SEO Plugin

This will allow you to set keyword-rich custom titles and Meta descriptions for your posts for search engines.

A couple of popular SEO plug-ins to consider are All in One SEO Pack and WordPress SEO by Yoast.

Again, this is something your web designer or an SEO professional can easily install for you.

4) Hand Submit to Search Engines

What good is a site if no one can find it? That's why getting listed in Google and the other popular search engines and directories is one of the most effective ways of getting free targeted traffic to your website.

You have probably seen lots of automated submission services where you pay a small fee for them to submit your site to hundreds of search engines. These services not only won't help - they can actually hurt you.

Almost all of these free directories never send an actual visitor to your website and getting links from them can hurt your ability to rank in the real search engines like Google and Bing.

The best practice is to manually submit your site to search engines yourself. WordPress makes this easy once you set up an account in Google, Bing and Yandex Webmaster Tools.

If unsure, just ask your webmaster or SEO Specialist to set up these accounts.

5) Add Tags to your Posts

WordPress, straight out of the box, comes ready to embrace search engines. The tags features is one of those SEO friendly features you should take advantage of.

Be sure to add relevant keyword-rich tags to every post you publish.

6) Leave Comments on Other Blogs

Start linking more to other people's posts on their blogs and encourage them to link back to you.

One search engine factor that Google considers is backlinking. A website that has more backlinks is considered more of an authority site and gets higher rankings.

7) Block Spam Comments

When people leave comments on your blog, it counts as content to Google. So if you have a website about DIY crafts and someone leaves 5 comments about "cheap enhancement pills' that ruins your keyword relevancy and hurts your rankings.

So blocking spam comments from posting to your blog will improve your SEO - as well as make your real blog readers happy.

8) Internal Linking

One easy way to get more traffic is to add internal links to your blog posts.

For example if you have an article on Overcoming Your Resistance to Blog Writing, then at the bottom of that article you can post links to "Other Related Articles You May Enjoy": 4 Content Marketing Trends for Business Owners in 2017 and other related articles. WordPress SEO by Yoast does this automatically for you as you can see at the bottom of this post.

9) Use Image Alt Tags

For each image you use in your post, ensure you add the Alt tag to help them rank better in image searches. This is another excellent place to put relevant keywords.

Google has an image search function that works in pretty much the exact same way as the webpage search with keywords and relevance. So adding Alt tags helps Google find and include your images when someone does an image search.

10) Tweak Blog Post Titles

If you quickly wrote titles to your blog posts before, take time to review them first before publishing.

Your blog post titles are vitally important to your SEO rankings so compare the keywords used to your keyword list and make your blog titles more keyword rich.

11) Add Social Media Sharing Buttons

When Google sees a blog article is getting a lot of posts and shares on social media, it boosts the ranking of that blog post.
