Choosing the Right Web Designer

syracuse ny web designer

By Cole Pannell

So, you've finally decided that you need a web site for your business? Well, there are a few key-points to remember BEFORE you make one of the most crucial decisions for your business.

Choosing the right designer for your new business web site:

When it comes to choosing the right web designer for your web site, you should always shop around first to check out all of the available options. There are many web design companies out there to choose from. And most of them are pretty good at what they do.

Always ask to see samples of a web designer's previous work and examine their portfolio. This will help you get a better feel for the style of sites any particular web designer is capable of doing. Most of the time, web designers have their own unique style and you can easily spot which designs they've done in the past. I mean, it's similar to any other artist's style; you can definitely spot their previous works based on the general layout, color scheme, and over-all visual appearance of the sites.

Experience is also a key factor here. Just like any other craft, web designers get better with experience. So naturally, you'll be better off by choosing a web designer who has more experience under his or her belt.

Another key point you should define is whether or not the web designer can make you a 100% custom web site. Or will it be just a basic template web design that 100's or even 1,000's of people already have across the Internet. Pretty much anybody these days can create a basic HTML web page in Microsoft Word or Publisher and change the title of it to reflect their Branson business. But you must ask yourself: "is this really what I'm looking for"?

Web sites that are truly custom built will stand out more the rest of the basic template web designs that so many people are using these days. A custom web design will catch the eye of your potential customers and show them that you have a really professional web presence and you mean business.

A lot of web designers these days choose to do the template web sites for one of 2 reasons:

It's cheaper to use a basic template web design. They might be lacking the necessary skills needed to develop a fully custom web site. Whatever the case may be, make sure you go with a designer who is capable of creating a custom web design for you. It will inevitably cost you more for a custom site. But it is totally worth the extra money spent. Trust me, in the end you will be much happier with your web site if it is a site that's unique and created for just your business and not everybody else's.

Communication with a potential web designer is also critical in the development of your web site. You need to be perfectly clear and define your goals up-front, before you actually sign a web design service contract with a designer. Make sure you know what you are getting for your money and make sure you get it in writing! I have a 9-page web site design contract that I use every single time I design a new web site. Included in this contract is an itemized list of all work that is to be performed during the development of the web site. Things like the exact number of pages, the exact number of graphics to be designed, whether or not I need to create a logo, the estimated time before completion, whether or not routine site maintenance will be performed after the site is 6 months or 1 year old, etc.

Defining these things will help you in the long run and will also make sure you and the web designer are on the same page.

I also use what I call my "web design planning worksheet". This worksheet gives "milestones" or deadlines for each phase of the web design project. Things like "In 2 weeks the general layout will be done" and "2 weeks after that, the site will be coded and launched" and then "In one moth after the web site is launched, we will evaluate it to see what needs to be adjusted", etc. (these are just examples, by the way. the details included in one of my actual worksheets gives exact dates and more specific milestones).

And what about the web hosting for your new web site? Usually, a web designer will provide some kind of insight as to which hosting company they recommend. Web designers in general have a preference for a hosting company that they know will be a good choice for your web site and they should assist you in making this selection.

Fortunately, we have our own web server here at Digital Spiral Web Design so we can do all of the hosting ourselves. This is very beneficial because we can make sure the web server stays up and running and if there is any maintenance that needs to be performed on the server, we can do it ourselves in a timely manner. Plus, we will always cut a deal for our web site hosting services to any new business who chooses us to do their web design.

Will your new web site require any specialized web programming? Well, the answer to that question is based solely on the needs of your Branson web site. What kind of site will it be? Does it need a shopping cart for e-commerce? Will you be implementing any special web applications or online forms for your viewers to fill out? Will it be a web site that requires your viewers to fill out registrations and sign up so they can login? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then chances are you'll need a web designer who can also program.

Web developers and designers must be skilled in the art of web PROGRAMMING (something that is very different from regular web DESIGN). Web programming involves the implementation of different web programming languages like JAVA, PHP, Flash, SQL, or.NET. All of these web programming languages need highly skilled individuals to code them and develop web programs with them.

I personally love PHP! I use it for pretty much everything. I won't go into the details of PHP in this article (I would have to write an entire book about it to cover all of it). But with PHP, I can create pretty much any web application that is logically possible.

So, make sure you choose a web designer who is also capable of coding any special functions that your new web site needs. This decision needs to be discussed and gone over by any potential web designer you might use to create your Branson web site.

And finally, you should always check with the potential web designer's previous clients to make sure they give him or her a good reference. Remember: it just like any other service. You need to verify a web designer's references and make sure they can do what they say they can do.

So, just to summarize all of the tips I've mentioned:

Ask questions, questions, and more questions before you choose a web designer. Clearly define your goals from the beginning. Ask to see the web designer's portfolio and samples of their previous work. Make sure they can help you with choosing a web hosting provider. Get documentation to show exactly how many pages will be included in the project and the estimated time before completion. If your web site requires special web programming, make sure the designer can handle it. I hope this article helps anybody who is getting ready to have a new web site designed. A good web site can really do wonders for your business!

Security Needs for a Small Business

By Bo Brown

With industrialization and globalization, a new kind of industry has come into being known as the small business. It has a limited capital starting from 5crores. With the boom in IT infrastructure many small-scale industries have also started using websites and blogs to promote their business. But as we all know each coin has two sides to it so doe's use of IT and Net banking.

Hackers are the people who break through the system and steal and sell the personal and confidential information of an organization to its competitors. They always look for small or micro business organizations as they don't have a high level of security and it is also very easy to hack into their systems.

These are the following sources available for the hackers:

The website or blog

With the advancement in technology, the small and micro businesses have blogs and websites to display their information. This website is connected through a server in the main motherboard with has all the information that is confidential to the business. Hackers tend to target the website or blog and reach the motherboard to get the information of transactions and the day to day dealings of a business.

Mobile phones or tablets

Since the scale of business is small and micro day to day dealings can be done through mobile or net banking. Since we all are careless about the security of our phones this gives the hackers a chance to get into our phones and tablets to hack the information about the transaction and sometimes steal important banking information and capsize the entire amount.

Emails

Emails are another source of getting information from the system. Hackers or spammers can send emails with advertisements or links that once clicked on can generate virus in the system which helps the hackers to steal the information.

Every problem has a remedy to it so does this one. Here are some ways in which we can protect our confidential information from being stolen.

Passwords

Setting passwords on servers and Wi-Fi can be a proven way to protect any outsider from breaking into the system and cracking the information.

Encryption

It is a process of encoding a message in such a way that only authorized parties can access it and those who do not have the authority cannot see or read it. It helps in keeping the information amongst trusted individuals.

Updating

Frequently updating the software allows us to keep the hackers away as they need time to figure out how to crack an update thus keeping our information safe and secure.

Security questions and creative answers

We should come up with unique and different answers for the security questions asked for the safety. The basic and general answers are a guess away.

Don't link accounts

Linking the website with the bank account for easy transactions is a bad idea as for when the hackers hack into the website he also gets the access to the bank accounts.

Thus the small business can adopt these means to protect their data from hackers.

From Business Plan to Web Design - Starting an Online Business

By Clinton Hunter

Before you officially "open the doors" of your e-business, you need to create a business plan. Turn your business idea into a plan that will help you succeed (or you may find while going through this process that it is better to scrap the idea and come up with something better).

Putting a business plan together may seem like a daunting task. I will take you step by step through the process of creating a business plan, making the process a little easier for you. Putting a business plan together will include completing a market analysis, a competitive analysis, an advertising plan, pricing, branding, a sales strategy, and much more. This article will go over some of the basics.

You will want to consider marketing, financing, your target market, distribution of your product, finding out who your competition is, etc. In addition to considering these factors, you will want to set realistic goals for your small business.

Ask yourself the following questions: What is the purpose of your e-business? To make money, right? That's one purpose. What are some others? Perhaps you have created or found a product that the world just can't live without and you want to share it. Maybe you offer a service that will help others. You might have a hobby that you want to turn into a profession. Write down your purpose, whatever it is.

After you know what your purpose is, answer the following questions:

- Why am I committing my time and resources to this endeavor?

- How will I be helping others?

- What needs will this business meet?

- How will I be helping myself (owner), or ourselves (owners)?

- What "greater good" will be served with this business?

Once you have answered these questions, you can form your company's mission statement. Your mission statement identifies your company. Keep your mission statement to a few sentences. You can adjust your mission statement as your company grows and changes, but the core values included in your mission statement should remain the same.

What is your Company's Purpose?

Perhaps you have created or found a product that the world just can't live without and you want to share it. Maybe you offer a service that will help others. Once you have answered these questions, you can form your company's mission statement. Your mission statement identifies your company. Keep your mission statement to a few sentences. You can adjust your mission statement as your company grows and changes, but the core values included in your mission statement should remain the same.

Preparing to Launch Your Online Business-Strengths and Weaknesses

As you go through the process of planning your online business, you may not have the answer to every question we ask. Don't worry if you don't have all of the answers now, because that is the whole point of doing this plan-to help you find and discover the areas that might sneak up and get you in the future.

Having gone through the process of putting this plan in place, however, you will be better prepared to face unexpected turns and situations. Answer the questions you can and think about the ones you can't. There are a lot of details that will come together as you go through this process.

Part of making your online business successful is knowing your strengths and your weaknesses, along with the (potential) strengths and weaknesses of your company. What are you good at? What is your company good at?

- What are the strengths of your products? Price? Selection? Variety? Quality? Brand association?

- What are the strengths of you and your partners or team?

- What are your strengths with respect to reaching customers and telling them about your product?

- What are your leadership or organizational strengths?

- What is the vision of your company and how is that a strength?

The answers to the above questions may be the reasons you want to start an online business in the first place. You must also look at your weaknesses. Good business owners strive to identify areas of weakness so they can turn them around and make them areas of strength. It's better for you to discover weaknesses than your competitors or customers to discover them for you!

- How will the business run from start to finish?

- Do we need to hire people?

- Where will our products come from?

- How will we get the word out about our company?

- Do we have enough money to survive the start-up phase?

- Do we have a good system in place to track orders and make sure our customers are happy?

Preparing to Launch Your Online Business...Make Opportunities & Prepare for Unfortunate Circumstances

Successful online businesses take advantage of opportunities, whether they be changes in customer tastes or preferences, unmet market needs, or market niches that have never been addressed. What opportunities do you see that make you excited about your online business opportunity? Before you start an online business, consider:

- Do you see an unmet need?

- Is this a frustration you have experienced yourself?

- Is there a common feeling that something is missing among people you know or have talked to?

- Have there been changes economically, politically, or otherwise that have set a good stage for your online business?

- Now it's time to play devil's advocate and imagine what elements or factors could potentially harm your online business. It is important to identify such things that could adversely affect your business in order to prepare for such circumstances. Preparation is sometimes the best defense. Consider:

How will competition affect you?

Are you able to meet anticipated demand?

What if UPS goes on strike?

Is your business seasonal, and will that adversely affect your cash flow?

If you plan on starting an online business, consider writing down your business description and strategy. By now you know your company's purpose and your strengths and weaknesses. Use that information as you work out your business strategy.

The key element in your business description is to address how your business will meet the needs of your customers. In other words, how are you uniquely positioned to get your needed product to the right people and make money in the process?

Now let's discuss the strategy behind your business. Consider:

- What type of business are you (retail, manufacturing, consulting, etc.)?

- Will you need employees?

- Where is your business located?

- What are your hours of operation?

- How do you plan to make money?

- What costs will be involved?

- How much money do you need to start, and how will that money be spent?

Now is the time to tout you and your team. Your confidence, enthusiasm, and vision are incredibly important to the success of your business, and to gain the confidence of investors. They are ultimately investing in YOU, so sell yourself and your team!

Consider:

Who are your team members, managers, or partners? What is their level of education? Do you or they have any experience in similar ventures or businesses? Are you particularly passionate about your products? Why? Who will be in charge of what? Who has final decision-making authority?

Every business can potentially be faced with challenges. What risks might you face in your business, and how will you be prepared to face them? Consider:

Have you in the past, or are you currently facing litigation? Do you have access to an attorney? Do you have adequate insurance coverage for your business? Who is in charge of record keeping, and how are those records stored and protected? Do you use an accountant?

Once you have a plan for your online business, you need a website. When conceiving your website, before you think about colors, pictures, or even format, take into consideration the answers to the questions above and come up with the purpose of your website. That will make your web design process a lot easier.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Web Development Company

By Mike Nielsonm

A good web development company can change the way people look at your company. Not only that, it can help you increase traffic to your business page in an exponential manner. Integrating custom web application in your website to fit your business requirement will leave a positive impact on your clients and increase the conversion rate for your Website.

Since your business Website reflects your brand image, you should choose a web design and development company which should be able to show the world what you always wanted to. You should do proper verification before finalizing your Web design company. You should check their staff quality and their strength. A good web design company will provide you all the details you asked for, and can also show you some of the significant work done in the past.

Consider you target audience: A good web design and development company should be able to understand your target audience and targeted market area. For example, if your product is meant to target audience in Orange County, you should always go for a Web development company in Orange County. A locally based company will be able to understand what can be appealing for masses there and design the site accordingly.

Marketing and SEO: The website design provided by your company should have the design, content, and other things keeping in mind the SEO perspective. For example, if a web development company in Orange County is designing your Website for local market, then content should have the required keyword density to make SEO easier.

You can also get a good idea by looking at the company's position in terms of SEO ranking. A good company should always appear within the first two pages as you enter "web development company in orange county" in search engine.

Your budget: Budget is a very important factor when it comes to selecting a good company. If some good companies are out of your budget, then you can go for new companies which will give you good value for your money. Finally, remember that you should hire a company which should help you in overall development of your Website and all the associated factors.

The 3 Key Questions Your Business Website Should Answer If You Want to Get Customers

By Angeline Plesek

Do you spend hours driving traffic to your business website pages through social media, search engine optimization, pay-per-click ads, etc... and then find your conversion rates and sales are less than desirable?

"Focus on the Customer!"-this is a very important topic if you are a business owner or manager, copywriter, online marketer, or anyone whose job is to gain and keep your potential customers' attention.

Eben Pagan, Expert Internet Marketer analyzed 37 business website home pages and critiqued them to see if they answered what he says are the "Top Three Questions" any business website trying to get customers should ask, but according to him-rarely do-which explains poor conversion results.

Pagan says business websites make this mistake, "... they focus their marketing on themselves, they talk about how great they are, how great their company is, how great their product is, without mentioning the specific, tangible result that it's going to deliver to the customer-the benefit that the customer gets."

He continues to say that it is so simple, but just not done enough-tell the customers what they are going to get and they will continue to listen...

(and let them know quickly since you only have about 3 seconds to get their attention).

3 Key Questions Your Web Pages Should Answer

According to Pagan, your business website should answer these three key questions:

1) What is it?

The prospect should know within a second or two what your product or service is once he lands on your home page or sales page.

2) What's it about?

The prospect should know within a second or two what your page is talking about.

3) What do I get?

Your web page should tell the prospect exactly what he gets once he takes the action you ask him to take.

Longer, Clear, Concise Headlines, No Images Get Results

Pagan was successful with two web pages that he created years ago-the interesting thing to note is that neither had images, both were just text-however, both had big bold headlines that most people would say were on the lengthy side (in other words-not short!)

But they were very clear, concise headlines that told the prospect exactly what he would get.

His winning headlines with no fancy design were:

"Take This Free 10 - Question Business Quiz to Find Out How Well Your Business Stacks Up When It Come to Marketing, Hiring, Growth, and Making Big Profits... "

If the business owners in your target market want to find out how well their business is doing in these areas compared to others... they'll take the time to fill out the quiz and get answers.

"Here's How to Meet and Date the Kind of Women You've Always Wanted"

If the men in your target market want to find the woman of their dreams, this headline would get attention.

Focus on the Customer and His Needs...

His point is that getting to the customers' needs right off the bat by letting them know you have the solution for their problem is not only simple, but necessary to get and keep their attention on your business web pages.

Pagan also says that business website owners aren't necessarily competing with just their competitors for customers, as much as they are just competing for their attention from other media noise.
