A Write Up on Website Development for Small Business

Website Development Syracuse NY

By Pkp Iyer

Small business website development is the real key to the success of small and medium business enterprises that crowd the web world today. The companies do not have the resources to go in for sophisticated, high-end, fully software-loaded websites that big Corporates and business conglomerates indulge in usually. SMEs have to confine their websites within the frameworks of their budget and objectives. There is no money to splurge on fancy websites. Here the purpose of the website is to declare a web presence and also to promote the marketing activities of the companies, utilizing the potential of the internet world. Customer friendliness is the watchword here. Small business website has to increasingly depend on Customer service which is increasingly seen as one of the most valuable uses for a business website. The website should be available on a 24 hour, seven days a week basis.

The basic rule for small business website is that every page of the website should be written from the visitor's point of view and not from that of the web promoter. The ten fundamental rules for effective small business website development are:

1. Always Be accessible. Show very clearly on your site all the ways that your customer can contact you - including e-mail, phone and fax numbers, and your office hours.

2. Return every e-mail or phone call in the same day, as far as reasonably possible. This may sound simplistic, but a recent experiment with the top Fortune 100 companies showed that nearly a third failed to respond to e-mail sent through their website within one month!

3. Acknowledge all orders. Send e-mail confirmations (this can be done very effectively with autoresponders), and if you're shipping actual products, give tracking numbers and expected delivery dates.

4. Provide a clear return policy, honour it and learn from it. This may give you more information about what's working and what's not.

5. Expect more phone calls. If your Web site traffic and response rates grow (which is, of course, what we want), so will the volume of phone calls, whatever your business or industry.

Regardless of the site quality, clear returns and privacy policies, secure servers, etc., people still require human interaction.

6. Keep the loading time of your webpage to the minimum.

7. Cut down on graphics and action movies and increase the response time of the website so that the client can quickly access all the pages he wants.

8. Search engine optimisation is a must if the website is to be brought during searches.

9. Put effective yet limited banner-ads and logos on the website. They all take time to load.

10. Put content that guide the client easily and lucidly through steps till confirming the order.

Small business web development must offer custom web development for small business websites which should ideally include complete ecommerce solutions and other such current tools. Small business website development keeps its focus on the development of affordable yet professionally designed websites for the use of the small business community. The constraints of budget, time and purpose must dictate such development without compromising on quality. Such optimal design and development are possible taking into account the fast development in technology and concepts of web development.

The small business segment in the world internet economy, mainly cater to marketing of products and services. They enter the web world with minimal investment and maximum expectations. They look to derive maximum benefits out of this ethereal web world. With the present stage of development, these expectations are not beyond the realms of reality. On the contrary, they are realistic and down to earth. The cost of domain registration web hosting, web design and development etc have all come down sharply following the widespread of use of the internet and internet technology. There are thousands of web development companies that offer packaged website development specifically designed for small business sector. No great fancy stuff here. Just the basic things- HTML-Flash-minimum graphics and effective content The key area to be ensured is the reliability of the web hosting service provider and the continuous availability of the website to the clients.

Small website development can be termed successful if they achieve these basic standards. Small clients who own these websites can rest assured that they have not exceeded their budget, means and at the same time that they have boosted their revenue earning potential, thereby adding substantially to their bottom line. Professional yet affordable websites development has become the order of the day. Who want to pump in thousands of dollars into developing a monolith of a website which no one would want to browse for fear of interminable loading time and cumbersome, interfering pages and pop-ups?

Certainly many successful small business websites owe their very existence to the discretion and maturity shown in selecting the appropriate model for websites and deploying content and technology in tune with their business objectives. Small business companies should taking care in finalising the right professional web developer who is well-versed with the requirements of the entrepreneur and the limitations of resources. Ideally small business website development should concentrate on and ensure that:

1. Website should offer all basic needs- dynamic web pages, optimal animation and graphics and realistic content.

2. Website should have minimum lead time between crashes and resumptions.

3. Websites should be able to offer 24hour support.

4. Good software and website maintenance agreements should be available.

5. Good feedback and contact arrangements with order and delivery tracking services.

This should put a small business website in a high orbit with no chance of coming down in a hurry. Small website development is all about, sense of direction and awareness of its' limitations. This professional approach should make the small business website eminently economical and small business website development worthy of the great efforts put in.

Make Your Real Estate Website Visible!

Real Estate Website Visible Syracuse NY

By Al Kernek

So, you've created a Website to highlight your realty services and listings. Now all you have to do is wait for the customers to roll in -- right? Wrong. Putting up a Website is only the first step. Now you have to fine tune your site's descriptors to boost its search engine ranking when prospective clients explore the Internet hunting for a REALTOR®. It does you little good to have a Website if no one can find it. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take that increase your odds of being noticed when buyers or sellers turn to the Web to find a real estate agent.

Ideally, it pays to have a meaningful Website address (also known as a Universal Resource Locator, or "URL"). Instead of your own or a realty name, your Website address should reflect the geographic area(s) where your services are targeted or any specialties on which you focus. For instance, if you farm housing tracts in north Austin, then good choices for a URL might be,, Using these, search engines are more likely to give you a higher placement when someone searches for "homes (or real estate) in north austin" than a competitive realty which services the same area but does not include the term "north austin" in their Website address. The key to achieving a higher ranking among search-engine returns is to be as specific as possible when casting your Internet "fishing net."

There is more you can do to enhance your search engine ranking. While the following discussion may sound technical, only new terminology is involved. The actual steps themselves are easy to implement.

"Tags" are descriptors in the underlying HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code which format Webpages. They contain important information that Internet search engines use to index your Website. This data is then compared to search information entered by engine users. Your Web authoring tool may allow you to enter Tag information without having to bother with HTML code. If not, don't panic! You don't have to become a Website programmer to manually insert critical data into your HTML code. Adding or modifying Tag information is surprisingly simple.

Whether or not your Web authoring tool allows you to enter Tag information, simply follow the advice given below to enhance your Website's visibility to search engines. If necessary, download a shareware HTML editor and use it to open your main Webpage, choosing the function that makes the HTML code appear. Selida and EditPlus are two good HTML editors which are offered free for thirty days.

On your PC or Web hosting site, open your main Webpage (usually "index.htm" or "index.html"). Maneuver to the Meta Tag entry functions within your authoring software or else bring up your Webpage within an editor so that the HTML code is visible.

To achieve higher search engine placing, it is important to have meaningful page Titles, especially for your main (i.e., home) page. The "Title" Tag for each Webpage is embedded in the HTML code. Look near the top of the page to find a line that reads

<title>xxxxx</title>where "xxxxx" is the current name assigned to your Webpage. In some cases, you may not even have a Title. If so, enter it directly into the HTML code immediately below the Tag using the above format.

Make the Webpage Title something meaningful, using words that a person searching for homes in North Austin, for example, would likely type in the Google or Yahoo search engine (e.g., "North Austin Homes").

Following the Title Tag, you should see a Meta Tag:

<meta name="Author" content="xxxxxxxx"></meta>where the data between the quotation marks is your name (or the name of the company that prepared your Website). It is a good idea to have this data consist of your name and the name of your realty. For example: <xmp><meta name="Author" content="Jane Doe - Quality Realty"></meta>That way, if someone is searching for you or your realty on the Web, there is a better chance they will find your Website.<p>Now, carefully choose the Keywords that describe your Website offerings. These should also be words or phrases that a potential buyer or seller would use in conducting an Internet search. Again, the more specific you can be the better. In our example, you would might include "north austin homes" as one keyword phrase. Perhaps "real estate agents in north austin" would be another good choice. Don't worry about being case sensitive. Ask your family, friends and fellow REALTORS for ideas. You can even see what Keywords high-ranking competitors are using by going to their Website and selecting View/Source on your browser.</p><p>Enter your new keywords and phrases using your Web authoring tool or an HTML editor. When using the latter, look near the top of the page and you will find another Meta Tag that reads</p> <xmp><meta name="Keywords" content="xxxx,yyyy,zzz"></meta>The words in-between the quotation marks following CONTENT are your Keywords. Erase the old ones if you wish and enter your new words or phrases, separating each by a comma. It is best to keep the number of entries under a dozen, and be sure to place the most important ones first.<p>Looking at the HTML code, you should see</p> <xmp><meta name="Description" content="xxxxx"></meta>directly below the Keywords Meta Tag. This is where you enter the text that a person using a search engine will see in the returned results, so make it descriptive and enticing. In our example, perhaps you would enter "Find your dream home by working with the number one realty in North Austin. Special programs for first-time buyers." Keep it concise but make it a marketing message. After all, your objective is to get a prospective client to visit your Website.<p>A final piece of advice - try to use your Keywords in the text on your main (i.e., Home) Webpage, as this reinforces your focus to Internet search engines. When finished making revisions, remember to save your changes and upload modified Webpages to your hosting vendor. Then be sure to re-submit changed Webpages to the major search engines - Google, Yahoo, and MSN for sure - and directories (e.g., Google, Yahoo and the Open Directory). After submitting, it can sometimes take weeks or months for a search engine to categorize your changes. Be patient. Periodic checks using your important Keywords in each search engine will alert you to when the changes begin to take effect.</p><p>Al Kernek is a real estate broker and author of "Creating E-Mail Newsletters - A Practical Guide for the Real Estate Community." Engaging A Website Development Firm That Suits Your Needs

Web Designing

By Kelvin A Smith

If you own a business website, then you should plan its maintenance keeping in the mind the future growth pattern of your business. The growth of your business would have a direct consequence on your website, because the faster or slower your business grows, that much more visitors and customers will be visiting your website. This means, as the business grows, you are looking at keeping your website updated with relevant technologies and website site development so that the website maintenance is hand in hand with your business growth.

Whenever we say website maintenance we are talking incorporating new web applications to add more features like product display system or integration with social media services or a new type of forum or commenting system. Website maintenance also includes upgrading the website to handle more visitors as well as more products.

Make it better by adding interactive media like pictures, video and flash content. You may also wish to revamp your website to reflect changing times and changing the image of your business.

Website Development

Irrespective of what kind of website maintenance you are planning to do, you have to get it done by a professional team of website developers. More often than businesses would care to admit, they would get their website development done by a freelance web designer who is working offshore, which would result in a website that is not technically complete and has code that is not built with a vision in mind.

This means, when you set out to make changes to it, it would be next to impossible. This is actually one of the major problems that happen when you end up hiring a bad web development person or company.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong. For instance the code that was used the website could lack a specific structure or any conformance to established industry standards. The database connections between the website and the database is all wrong or is simply not efficient, like using ten connections when two would suffice. This not only impacts your website performance, it is going to cost you a lot over the period of time of that particular website design is in use.

A poorly trained developer, out of sheer laziness or deadline pressures, would end up writing code that is difficult for others to follow. Some do not even bother putting in the basic security protocols that need to be implemented while designing the website, even if security wasn't an explicit requirement by the client.

Choosing A Good Developer

Given all these problems that one could face when you unknowingly hire a bad developer, the question comes down to this. How do you hire a good web developer person? You are looking for a developer, any developer, who understands that websites are part of the internet. The internet is always in a state of continuous evolution. Keeping in mind this fact, the web developer should develop the website to meet current standards but also allow for a code that can be modified by other developers, including themselves.

The web developer should understand that website is almost like a piece of software and as with software, there will be improved version of the website that will be built to replace the older versions of the website. Find a website developer who is willing to support your site even after its initial development.

Another aspect of web development that needs looking into is the incorporation of search engine optimization ideas into the website, from the very early stage of the website development. There is no reason why you, the customer, have to wait for the website development to finish and then hire a search engine optimization expert to make your website more visible to search engines.

Web Designing and Web Development of a CMS

By Anshul S

A lot goes into developing a CMS, which is a short form for a Content Management System. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a CMS, through the progress of web designing and web development processes websites have gone from static to dynamic and now with hundreds and thousands of pages. If you are reading this article on a portal or social networking website, then you will get an idea from this very website how large websites have become. This very website that you are visiting will be having thousands of authors and numerous numbers of articles.

To manage such huge amounts of pages, web development models around the world developed what has been termed as a CMS. A CMS allows an ease of control as well as the management of such huge amounts of data without going into the intricacies of web designing or web development. Managing such websites has become child's play, and quite literally that. Blogs are an interesting aspect of CMS, if any of you have, or have had a blog registered on any of numerous sites available which give you easy platform to write and post, are all forms of CMS. These platforms allow you to easily manage the looks (web designing) as well as feel (web development) aspects of your blogs.

Content Management Systems have decreased the difficulty of managing large websites to levels never seen in the past. With a handy and efficient CMS, companies and organizations can get rid of the whole IT departments which are responsible for managing the company web sites. The work of a whole team responsible for web designing and web development in IT departments can be cut short to a handful of people who can manage the websites through a handy CMS. CMS is virtually responsible for a whole new segment of the industry which has mushroomed in the last decade, the E-Commerce Portals and Solutions. Managing the e-commerce portals has become a fairly easy job with CMS platforms. It has become such a light job to launch and manage an e-commerce portal that even regional retailers have been enticed to take a ride of the online commerce bandwagon. In the earlier days, the issues involved in web designing as well as web development of such portals would have given nightmares to professionals. The whole trade cycle has been simplified to simple clicks with the advance in web development techniques. The looks which professionals with good web designing skills can impart with such portals amazes the audience with each new portal which is launched. A very famous portal which dealt in air tickets aimed at making the business clear to visitors who came to the portal via giving it a theme of an airport. This not only impressed the visitors but also made an impression to them of the professionalism of the portal in the business. Following with the point of themes, another major step forward for the web designing processes, the ease with which the themes can be changed in a CMS is amazing. If you have noticed the changed home pages of major blog writers, online shopping portals and other large websites on the festive occasions, it is only because CMS has solved the process to mere clicks of the mouse. Those of you who are familiar with the earlier techniques of doing the same, it could take up to days to implement a new theme onto the websites.

As of now if you have started thinking that the need and scope of web development and web designing professionals has reduced due to these developments in the web technology, you are as wrong as you can get. With such technologies taking over the Web development and web designing procedures used the world over, the need of the professionals has only increased. As the development of the CMS, takes in-depth technical knowledge, expertise as well as time. They are pieces of software which need to be developed with utmost care and technical know-how. A poorly designed CMS can wreak havoc for your website or online portal with programming leaks and loopholes. Even after successful implementation of the CMS it needs utmost care and nurturing exactly like a plant or a pet, to make sure it doesn't start behaving in ways we would not like. We would like it behave itself and not to let anybody without authority to take our stuff, especially if you are an online shopping portal. Maintaining CMS after implementation requires updating the programming codes and security loopholes which get created over time in any piece of software.
